Isamu Noguchi — Sculptor & Akari Light Sculpture Creator

Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) created the Akari light sculptures in Gifu, Japan in 1951. Over 200 washi paper and bamboo lanterns - each handmade by Ozeki, the sole manufacturer. Noguchi conceived Akari not as lamps but as sculptures of light. 'Akari' means both 'light' and 'lightness' in Japanese. Work in nearly every major museum worldwide.
